Marketing & Social Media

The advent of the internet has given birth to a number of concepts based around the fact that text and media are so easy to share. Viral Marketing generally involves the creation of a video or web site that is so funny or outrageous, one can't help but to tell their friends. The internet makes the spread of the "virus" easy through email, instant message, bulletin boards, blog comments, and a host of other tools.

Blogs are another great tool, turning everyone with access to the internet into a publisher. Some people choose to write their own content, tell stories or just report on the activities of others. Whether you are looking to become a reporter or give your employees a simple way to keep a persistent conversation through posts and comments, blogging software can help people communicate in a fashion similar to but much more evolved from email or instant message. Even phone messages are deleted after a few weeks - blog posts are an indelible record one person or group's actions, discoveries or thoughts.

In late 2004, blogging gave birth to Podcasting and its twin sister Video Blogging (Vlogging). Podcasts share the same power blogs offer to publishers, and in the same manner as blogs, publishing is virtually free and idiot-proof. Everyone can be a radio or television host – the sky is the limit. Businesses large and small can push training videos, quarterly reports and a slough of internal as well as external communications by harnessing the power of feeds and enclosed content. You may be thinking "iPod", but the only things you need to consume a podcast is a network connection, a screen and some speakers.

You may ask "What are Feeds? What about RSS?" RSS (Really Simple Syndication) is a document type used to provide instant updates in small chunks (like a blog post or a single podcast episode). These chunks can be text read by people, events read by a calendar like Outlook, contact information, audio/vieo clips, photos, documents, a collection of useful web links – anything, really. A piece of software generates a Feed containing the most recently published items and publishes it, waiting for a person or a Feed Reader to come along and grab the content. Feeds can even be comprised of posts from other feeds, hence the Syndication.
